Upcoming events

COSCAP does not only collect licence fees but is also very active in promoting and enabling developmental activities. In November COSCAP, the COSCAP Foundation and the US Embassy for Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean will be hosting a practical 10 day session on production music for film and advertisements with Daryl Harris of Mixme Entertainment. It will be available to 10 participants from Barbados through the offer of scholarships and it will also be open to participants from the OECS. The primary objective is to expose creators to new revenue streams and to various production techniques, to allow them to network and work in teams and to provide information on the types of contracts used in production music. Also in November, we have negotiated the participation of five Barbadian artists in the Commonwealth Resounds Music Festival. They will have the opportunity to showcase, sing in the Commonwealth Choir, Pianorama and workshops with artists from throughout the Commonwealth.

COSCAP will also be offering a series of small members’ meetings throughout the year on a variety of subjects such as financial planning, developing business plans and developing your career. These sessions will be free and we encourage you to tell us about subjects you would like to have addressed.

What do we do with license fees?

Since 2002, COSCAP has distributed over $3.5 million dollars. In 2009 there has been 1 related rights distribution (performers and producers) so far with 373 members qualifying for a total payment of $133,355 and 4 copyright distributions (writers and publishers) with a total value of $278,541 paid to484 members. The following distributions are planned for the remainder of 2009:

• General 2008 July – Dec (copyright and related rights) – registration deadline 15 November 2009
• Crop Over – registration deadline 10 November 2009
• Incoming Foreign Distributions
• Live Events – registration deadline 30 days following the event

Remember to maximise your royalty payments:

1. Notify all of your new works and sound recordings
2. Advise COSCAP of the use of your works – we are improving the information gathered from radio logs and we monitor live events but every bit of information helps. Help us to help you.
3. Advise COSCAP when you are performing at an event, whether in Barbados or overseas but you should tell us in advance of the event so that we can make sure that it is licensed.
4. You should also bear in mind that the amount you receive will depend on the number of songs you have, how popular they are (are they played or performed often locally and internationally, the number of people who have rights in the song and who share the royalties).

Further, we advise that in an effort to ensure that distributions are paid in a timely manner that we will no longer be delaying payment in order to allow persons time to register. It is your responsibility to register as soon as possible. If you miss the deadlines your payment will be delayed until the next distribution.
